Recent voting in the House of Representatives and Senate resulted in an increase in requirements and a decrease in funding for SNAP recipients. SNAP is the supplemental nutrition assistance program of the federal government which helps low income families purchase food. The ELCA Witness in Society Office is working on a policy memo for the Presiding Bishop's office, detailing the full range impact to programs after the passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (HR 1). In totality, over 3 million families are expected to lose SNAP assistance due to paperwork and work requirements, and we are concerned that less wealthy states may be forced to drop out of SNAP entirely if they can not make new required cost expectations in late 2027. It is now more important than ever to support our local food pantry, homeless shelter, and Lutheran World Hunger. Please keep those experiencing hunger and food insecurity, including the people in Gaza,
in your prayers.
